Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
