Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, despite its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
