A Denmark-based man has been convicted of uploading sexually explicit segments from protected films and television shows on the online platform Reddit.

Based on a law enforcement report obtained by media outlets, the anonymous man shared 347 clips of explicit content in a Reddit group he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million times.

The country's police state he has been handed a seven-month suspended jail term for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts explain the defendant was charged under a rarely-used provision in Denmark's copyright law, with the court finding that by removing the footage out of their intended setting, the accused had harmed the performers' "moral rights".

He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted data.

From March 2022 to May 2023, the man known as "KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted adult scenes featuring over 100 actresses.

He distributed them in the forum he was a administrator of.

Per the Danish copyright protection group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 members and participants were encouraged to request excerpts of particular performers.

In 2023, advocates reported the case to the police on behalf of the impacted actors, directors and production companies, which led to the forum being closed down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the actresses whose nude scenes were shared in the group, explained to Danish broadcasters at the time she felt there was a distinction between appearing naked in a film and being shown on Reddit.

The actress stated the uploads constituted "abuse".

'A significant message'

The defendant was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded culpable to the allegations recently.

In a comment after the verdict, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader said the decision sent an "important" message "indicating violations of creators' rights have consequences".

The verdict is viewed as unprecedented in the country for its application of the "moral rights" clause of the national copyright law, which states an creator's creation cannot be used in a manner which violates their standing.

Copyright law expert Dr Alina Trapova informed the media the case was "rare" for its emphasis on the harm to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them financially.

The extent to which the case could affect other countries is unclear.

But she said there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the coming years with the growth of AI, where "the integrity of an individual's creative output might be tempered with much more easily".
