India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe threshold set by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Developments

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that blankets the city as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected city leadership petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city recorded pollution peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst levels ever documented in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air sets in.

Medical and Economic Consequences

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million people calling home the capital region is significant, according to various studies.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
