Israelis have gathered around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.

The source explained the morning session finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies deliveries
  • After-conflict administration of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages come back not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"When the night comes, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city indicated another two dead people had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medics said.
