Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years of Age

The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic sound and positive spirit earned him a large and loyal following.

Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

He is among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
