Taliban Employed Discarded UK Technology to Find Afghans That Served Alongside Allied Troops, Investigation Hears
A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind confidential technology allowing the militant group to locate local individuals who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk
The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to relocate and alter their phone numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are currently examining official response of a catastrophic disclosure of private information affecting approximately 19k individuals who had applied to relocate to the United Kingdom to flee the Taliban.
The Information Breach Occurred
A spreadsheet including private information, comprising names, addresses and sometimes relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker stationed at British military command in February 2022.
The leak became known in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to the UK were posted on Facebook.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be a false assumption that militant forces are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. That is what the unit did.”
During testimony about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Initial findings submitted to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the incident had been murdered.
A superinjunction regarding the incident was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with advised Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and altered their contact details. That constituted the crucial data that, should militant forces had access to these details, would cause their location being found,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The source contested that internal investigation performed by a former official had been incorrect to conclude that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves former occupations.”
The source explained disturbing abuse suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
