Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the prior day, the home side blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome signalled successive Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to juggle league and continental football with a limited team has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared tired all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

Commanding Opening Period

Goals Galore

Second Half

The primary change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- City player Park came closest, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their cushion when a excellent Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any team who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to position them in a commanding position after nine games.
