The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Two Dozen Days In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a personal account next month titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his experience endured in custody.

This news was made just 11 days after Sarkozy left prison while he appeals his conviction for unlawful coordination connected to efforts to secure presidential race money linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, implying the memoir centers around his reflections while in isolation as opposed to a broader observation on the strained and struggling French prison system.

“I forget silence, not present in that facility, where there is constant sound,” he states. “The noise persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, he was present via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII from France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Reading Material

It is not certain whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, where a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was placed in solitary confinement for his own security in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities at La Santé prison in the city. Guards occupied an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt while inside worried that prison cuisine could have been tampered with. He had facilities to cook for himself but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly every day during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better out of prison rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began last month when a French court gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire political donations for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for next spring.
